Atom began from a central point similar to the seed in an avocado. Four cups radiate from this point like a Pelton wheel used in early hydroelectric power stations. Tension and balance of contrasting shapes play a major role in my sculptures. I explore the aesthetic beauty of shapes found in biology and the human form and juxtapose these with designs found in manufactured products. In doing so, I strive to disrupt the symmetry and predictability of these forms, while preserving the integrity of the sculpture. Originally from England, I emigrated to New Zealand in 1989 where I started a course in bronze sculpture. After exhibiting in New Zealand, I returned to England in 1993 for a limited period, to pursue my dream as a maker of abstract bronze sculptures and also to continue with my other passion for creative writing. During my time in England I had several exhibitions and gained a Master of Arts at Cardiff University. I returned to New Zealand in 2002 and in 2006 I had my first sculpture cast in glass. It was not until 2017 that I was able to buy a kiln to cast my own work. In addition to bronze and cast glass sculptures, I have been keen to look at ways of producing affordable sculpture by making sculptures in molded polyethylene that are lit internally using a LED light.
